REGIONAL DISTRIBUTION SAVES A MILLION DOLLARS A YEAR
A Midwestern OEM originally distributed automotive service parts to dealers throughout the U.S. from a single, high volume distribution center. Initially, their sole automated facility proved to be efficient at shipping hundreds of smaller parts, including nuts, bolts, electrical kits, etc. When dealing with heavier products such as motor oil, tires, and batteries, however, they found their outbound freight costs to be increasingly excessive. To help improve the cost effectiveness of this particular customer, the distribution specialists at HJS set up an inventory management system for these harder to handle components, and established a same-day, national distribution program from four regional shipping points. This effort not only resulted in faster service to the OEM’s dealers, it produced a savings in outbound freight of more than a million dollars a year.
